WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Holy Cross field hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 20 American Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action at Jacobs Field. With the loss, the Crusaders drop to 3-6 overall (0-1 Patriot League) on the season while the Eagles improve to 4-5 on the season (1-0 Patriot League).
The Eagles wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, with 40 second off clock in the first half, as Irene Schickhardt grabbed a rebounded shot and put the Eagles up 1-0. Just under seven minutes later, at the 6:53 mark, Schickhardt made a pass from the end line to Christine Fingerhuth in the front of the goal, setting up a 2-0 lead for American.
With less than two minutes left in the first half, a penalty corner in Crusader territory allowed Natalie Ellenberger and Anne-Miek DeWiljes to set up Schickhardt for her second goal of the season, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
At the 54:07 mark, Schickhardt scored her third goal of the game, assisted by Anne Van Erp, making the final score, 4-0.
Senior goalkeeper Erin Singleton (Amesbury, Mass.) made eight saves for the Crusaders while American's Alyssa Poorman had four stops while picking up the shutout.
Holy Cross returns to action on Monday, October 6, hosting Stanford for a game scheduled at 1:00 p.m.
