Worcester, Mass. - Junior forward Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H.) scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Holy Cross field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Colgate on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action. With the win, Holy Cross gets back to the .500 mark at 5-5 overall (1-0 Patriot League), while the Raiders fall to 5-5 overall (0-1 Patriot League).
The Raiders took a 1-0 lead into halftime after Dana Shaner took a pass from Maddie Watrobski and blasted a shot into the bottom left corner of the net at the 17:32 mark.
But the Crusaders came back to tie things up with 19:52 remaining in the game when senior forward Jenna Cook (Walpole, Mass.) collected a pass from sophomore Sara O'Coin (Worcester, Mass.) and beat Colgate keeper Jacque DeMarco to even the score at 1-1.
Then, with just 3:58 on the clock, Welch scored what would be the game-winning goal when she lofted a shot over the head of DeMarco to put Holy Cross up 2-1.
Junior Laura Cohen (Summit, N.J.) gave the Crusaders an insurance goal with less than two minutes remaining after a nice set up by Welch for the 3-1 score.
Kuhn made three saves on the day, while DeMarco finished with five stops. The Crusaders enjoyed a 14-6 shot advantage, despite Colgate's 13-6 penalty corner edge.
The Crusaders are back at it again tomorrow, when they host #16 Boston College at 1:00 p.m. at the Hart Astroturf.
