WORCESTER, Mass. - Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H.) scored two and had one assist, Kristin Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) had a goal and an assist and Susie Whelan (Acton, Mass.) added a goal as the Holy Cross field hockey team won their Patriot League opener 4-1 against Lafayette Saturday at the Hart Turf Field.
Senior Whelan scored the first goal of the game and the only goal in the first half on a penalty shot at 22:21. This was Whelan's second goal of the season and her seventh of her career as a defender.
Sophomore goalkeeper, Erin Singleton (Amesbury, Mass.) had four saves in the first half and did not allow the Leopards to score for 59 minutes.
The Crusaders scored their other three goals in the second half. The first one came from Welch on an assist from Sara O'Coin (Worcester, Mass.). Then Welch turned around and gave the ball to sophomore Schulz for her second goal of the season.
Lafayette scored at 59:05 when Maggie Condon (Lake Bluff, Ill.) tapped in a ball from Maggie DeFilippo (Far Hills, N.J.) right in front of the goal.
Welch scored her second goal of the game only seconds later off an assist from Schultz. Welch leads the Crusaders with 11 goals and three assists.
Holy Cross improves to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in league play as they continue their winning streak with five straight wins. Lafayette drops to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Crusaders are back in action Sunday when they travel to Yale at 2:00 p.m.
