Field Hockey Downs Dartmouth, 3-2

HANOVER, N.H. - Junior Courtney Callahan (Acton, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal and had an assist as the Holy Cross field hockey team edged Dartmouth, 3-2, in non-league action on Sunday afternoon at the Chase Astro Turf Field. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 3-5 on the season while Dartmouth drops to 1-6.
The Big Green struck first just 47 seconds into the game as Rebecca Sobel tipped a pass from Virginia Peisch into the goal.
Just nine minutes later, at the 9:40 mark, the Crusaders took advantage of a penalty corner as sophomore Alana Sikorski (Glen Gardner, N.J.) and Callahan set up senior Kristin Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) to get a shot past Dartmouth goalkeeper Meagan Vakiener, making the score, 1-1.
At the 27:44 mark, the Crusaders struck again as sophomore Kara Gonnerman (St. Louis, Mo.) scored off a rebounded shot by Schulz, making the score, 2-1. With less than five minutes left in the first half, Kelly Hood scored off a shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner, assisted by Kristen McCormick and Peisch, evening the score, 2-2.
With just under seven minutes left in the second half, Callahan tipped the game-winner in the goal cage off a pass from Sikorski, making the final score, 3-2.
Holy Cross senior goalkeeper Erin Singleton (Amesbury, Mass.) made a season-high 11 saves while Vakiener had seven stops for the Big Green.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, October 4 at 12:00 p.m., as they travel to American for their first Patriot League game of the season.
