Worcester, Mass. - Juniors Laura Cohen (Summit, N.J.) and Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H.) both scored two goals to lead the Holy Cross field hockey team to a 4-1 non-conference win over Fairfield University on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Holy Cross gets back to the .500 mark at 4-4 overall, while the Stags fall to 1-8 on the season.
Cohen opened up the scoring just over five minutes into the contest when she blasted a shot off of a penalty corner past Fairfield goalkeeper Liz Thomas for a 1-0 Crusader lead. Cook and Whelan were credited with assists.
The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead at the 14:22 mark when Cohen tacked on another score on a penalty stroke, but the Stags fought back and cut the lead to one (2-1) after a score by Emily Janis, who was assisted by Brittany Bates.
Welch then tallied her fifth goal of the season with just 2:24 remaining in the half when she scored on a penalty corner, giving HC a 3-1 advantage. Cook and Whelan were both credited with their second assists of the day on the play.
Welch rounded out the scoring at the 58:23 mark when she one-timed a centering pass by Cook to give Holy Cross a 4-1 cushion.
Crusader goalie Sony Kuhn (Cincinnati, Ohio) made four saves on the afternoon to record her fourth win of the season, while Thomas finished with five stops. The Crusaders enjoyed a 16-7 shot advantage, despite a 7-6 Fairfield edge on penalty corners.
The Crusaders play host to Yale on Sunday, September 25 at 1:00 p.m.
