Worcester, Mass. - Junior forward Tara Welch scored two goals and senior forward Jenna Cook added a goal and two assists to lead the Holy Cross field hockey team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Rhode Island on Wednesday night. With the win, Holy Cross snaps a three-game losing streak and improves to 2-3 on the season, while the Rams fall to 3-3 overall.
Cook (Walpole, Mass.) opened up the scoring in the fifth minute when she put in a rebound off of junior Laura Cohen's initial shot attempt on a penalty corner. Cohen was credited with the assist.
The Crusaders then took a 2-0 lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the first stanza after Welch (New Boston, N.H.) took a pass from Cook and beat URI goalkeeper M.J. Britt for the score. Welch tallied her second goal of the night on a penalty corner with less than six minutes remaining in the half to give HC a 3-0 cushion at the break. Cook and junior Susie Whelan (Acton, Mass.) set up the play on the corner.
The Rams were able to get on the board late in the second half when Jen Centenich scored on an unassisted effort, but that would be as close as URI would get.
Holy Cross goalkeeper Sony Kuhn (Cincinnati, Ohio) made six saves on the night to record her second win of the season, while Britt finished with nine stops for the Rams. The Crusaders doubled up their Ram counterparts with a 16-8 shot advantage and an 8-4 penalty corner edge.
The Crusaders host Harvard University on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
