NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior Katie Aylward (Watertown, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal but it wasn't enough as the Holy Cross field hockey team lost to Yale, 3-1, at Johnson Field. The Crusaders drop to 1-4 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 1-2.
Ashley McCauley struck first for Yale, at the 20:46 mark, in the first half with a breakaway from centerfield and shooting it around senior goalkeeper Erin Singleton (Amesbury, Mass.) into the far left corner. Jayna Whitcher put the Bulldogs ahead, 2-0, after scoring off a rebound in front of the cage.
Just three minutes into the second half, at the 38:02 mark, Alyward scored her first career goal on an unassisted shot past Yale's goalkeeper, Charlotte Goins.
Katie Cantore capped off the Bulldogs' victory with a goal, at the 63:04 mark, with an unassisted goal, making the final score, 3-1.
Singleton had a season-high 10 saves, while Goins made four stops.
Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, September 17, when it hosts New Hampshire for a game scheduled at 7:00 p.m.
