WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Kristin Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal as the Holy Cross field hockey team edged Providence, 1-0, in a non-conference contest at the Hart Turf Field. With the win, the Crusaders record their first victory of the season, bringing them to 1-3 overall, while Providence falls to 3-2.
With less than 14 minutes left in the first half, at the 20:26 mark, Schulz received a long pass from sophomore Alanna Sikorski (Glen Gardner, N.J.), and then chipped the ball into the left corner of the cage.
The Friars' out shot Holy Cross 6-1 in the first half, including a shot with 6:10 left in the first half that ended up in the goal but was disallowed after being ruled a dangerous shot.
The Crusaders' defense turned up the heat in the second half, turning away several scoring opportunities for Providence, including seven of 10 penalty corners.
Senior goalkeeper Erin Singleton (Amesbury, Mass.) had an amazing night in the cage, making seven saves for Holy Cross and tallying her first shutout of the season. The Friars' Rachel Chamberlain made two stops.
The Crusaders return to action when they travel to Yale on Saturday, September 13, for a game scheduled at 1:00 p.m.
