New Haven, Conn. - Junior Laura Cohen (Summit, N.J.) scored on a penalty corner with less than two minutes remaining in the game, but it was too little, too late as the Holy Cross field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Quinnipiac University in a disappointing loss for the Crusaders. Holy Cross is now 1-1 this season, while the Bobcats improve to 2-1.
Jennifer Kinchala scored both Quinnipiac goals, the first coming just 13 minutes into the contest when she beat HC goalkeeper Sony Kuhn (Cincinnati, Ohio) after a set-up pass by Kristen McCarthy.
The Bobcats took the 1-0 lead into the half and got an insurance goal off the stick of Kinchala in the 38th minute of play, when she redirected a pass into the back of the net.
Cohen responded with her third goal of the season when she blasted a shot past QU goalie Erin McKay off a penalty corner with just 1:03 seconds remaining in the game. Juniors Tara Welch (New Boston, N.H.) and Suzie Whelan (Acton, Mass.) were both credited with assists. But that was all the offense the Crusaders could muster, as they were out shot 16-11 on the day and managed just five shots on goal. The Bobcats also had a 5-4 advantage on penalty corners.
Kuhn made seven saves for the Crusaders, while McKay came up with four in the win.
Holy Cross travels to Providence College on Tuesday night for a 7:00 p.m. match-up with the Friars.
