Field Hockey Falls to Fairfield, 3-0, In Season-Opener

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Holy Cross field hockey team dropped its season-opener to host Fairfield, 3-0, in non-conference action this afternoon.
At the 13:21 mark in the first half, the Stags took a 1-0 lead. Anne Nieuwenhuis scored the first Fairfield goal off of a penalty corner, assisted by Amy Hosking.
With 5:09 left in the second half, Fairfield's Taylor Callahan stole the ball at midfield from the Crusader defense, passing it to the right side of the circle to Marit Westenberg who scored the second Stags' goal. With one second left on the clock, Molly Byrnes converted a penalty corner pass from Nieuwenhuis to make the final score 3-0.
Jennifer Utz made six saves for Fairfield, while senior Erin Singleton (Amesbury, Mass.) had eight stops for Holy Cross.
The Crusaders return to action on Friday, September 5, when they travel to Harvard for a game scheduled at 7:00 p.m.
