Field Hockey Earns 4-1 Victory Over Lehigh
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross sophomore forward Katy Cronin (Franklin, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal and also a pair of assists to help lead the Crusaders to a 4-1 triumph over Lehigh in Patriot League field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Turf Field. With the win, Holy Cross improves to 5-11 overall and 1-4 in the Patriot League, while the Mountain Hawks fall to 3-14 on the season and 0-5 in the Patriot League. The five wins this year for the Crusaders are the most since the squad earned seven victories in 2008.
Cronin scored the contest's first marker at the 8:01 mark of the game, as she tipped in a loose ball from inside the circle for her team-leading fourth goal of the year, to put Holy Cross ahead 1-0. Holy Cross kept up the offensive intensity and scored its second goal in the 15th minute. Crusader sophomore midfielder Michelle McNeil (Canton, Mass.) received a pass from junior midfielder Colby Lohrey (West Simsbury, Conn.) and launched a shot from the center of the circle to give Holy Cross the 2-0 lead.
McNeil also helped put the Crusaders ahead, 3-0, just over two minutes later (16:47), as she received a pass from Cronin from the left side and drove home her second goal of the afternoon and her third of the season. Lehigh kept battling and cut the deficit to 3-1 at the 22:20 mark of the contest, as Marissa Glatt scored her 12th goal of the season with an assist by Amanda Granger.
After the halftime intermission, Holy Cross jumped out offensively and scored just 2:28 into the second stanza. Crusader senior captain Carly Grimaudo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) recorded her third goal of the season on a one-timer from Cronin to put Holy Cross ahead 4-1. Lehigh had a chance in the 62nd minute to add a goal, as it had a pair of shots off a penalty corner, but the Holy Cross backline and junior goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) stood tall and kept the ball out of the back of the cage. The Mountain Hawks had one final chance with 28 seconds left on the clock, as Glatt ripped a shot on net, but Matchett made the save to clinch the victory.
Matchett improves her record to 4-8 on the season and made three saves in the winning effort. Lehigh goalies, Julia Ward and Sydney Maltinsky combined to make seven saves, as defender Kassidy Green made a defensive save for the Mountain Hawks. Holy Cross held advantages in shots (16-10), shots on goal (12-4) and penalty corners (5-2).
The Crusaders will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 2, as they will host Colgate at 1:00 p.m.
