Field Hockey Drops 3-1 Game To Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Haley Alvarez posted one goal and one assist for the Bears as the Holy Cross field hockey team fell to Brown, 3-1, in non-conference action at Goldberger Field on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 4-11 overall, while the Bears improve to 6-7 overall.

The Bears took the first penalty corner of the contest in the sixth minute but a shot by Katarina Angus was blocked. The Crusaders took the first shot on goal of the game when senior Carly Grimaudo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) had a shot saved by Brown goalie Shannon McSweeney in the 12th minute. In the 13th minute, the Bears took a 1-0 lead when Alvarez found the back of the net. Brown increased its lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute when Angus scored off a pass from Charlotte Small.

Brown took a 3-0 lead in the 38th minute when Alexis Miller netted a goal off the first shot of a corner. Alvarez and Avery Burns each tallied an assist on the goal. The Crusaders took back-to-back shots on goal in the 40th minute with attempts by senior Jillian Caffrey (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and junior Michelle McNeil (Canton, Mass.), but McSweeney was able to make the saves. Freshman Gabriella Smith (Mendham, N.J.) netted her first collegiate goal to make it a 3-1 score in the 66th minute as she tipped  a shot in from in front of the goal. Sophomore Katy Cronin (Franklin, Mass.) posted an assist. The goal would be the last of the game for the 3-1 final score.    

Junior Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) made four saves, while McSweeney tallied seven saves to earn the win. Brown outshot Holy Cross, 12-11, but the Crusaders had eight shots on goal and the Bears took seven. The Bears had five penalty corners and the Crusaders took four.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Oct. 26 when they host Patriot League opponent Lehigh at noon.
