EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette senior midfielder Haley Keenan scored the game-winning goal at the 9:03 mark of the contest to help lead the Leopards to a 4-0 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Rappolt Field. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 4-10 on the season and 0-4 in the Patriot League, while Lafayette improves to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Keenan scored on the contest's first shot on net, as she knocked in a goal off a rebound in front of the net to put Lafayette ahead 1-0 at 9:03. Holy Cross sophomore midfielder Michelle McNeil (Canton, Mass.) had a shot for the Crusaders in the 22nd minute, but the ball sailed wide of the net.
Lafayette had back-to-back penalty corners in the 28th minute, but the Crusader defense and Holy Cross junior goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) kept the ball out of the net. Crusader sophomore forward Katy Cronin (Franklin, Mass.) had a chance to score in the 32nd minute, but missed the net wide, as Holy Cross would trail Lafayette 1-0 at the end of the first half.
In the second stanza, Lafayette wasted little time as it scored its second goal of the contest at the 41:06 mark of the game off the stick Kelsey Mead. The Leopards increased the lead to 3-0 in the 51st minute, as Jenna Seybert deflected in a pass from Kirby Szalkowski. Lafayette added the final goal of the contest in the 55th minute on a breakaway by Kristin Heaney to clinch the 4-0 victory for the Leopards.
Matchett made one stop on the afternoon, while Lafayette goalkeeper Jessica Deutsch was not called upon to make a save. The Leopards held advantages in shots (10-2), shots on goal (5-0) and penalty corners (7-2).
Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 23, when it will travel to Brown for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
