Field Hockey Defeated By American, 4-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. – American field hockey midfielder Carly Atchison tallied a goal and an assist to help lead the Eagles to a 4-0 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon in the Patriot League opener for both teams at Jacobs Field. With the win, American improves to 5-2 on the season and 1-0 in the Patriot League, while the Crusaders slip to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Atchison wasted no time in scoring the game-winning goal, as she launched a shot from inside the circle just 31 seconds into the contest to give American the 1-0 lead. Holy Cross had a chance to score in the 28th minute, as sophomore Michelle McNeil (Canton, Mass.) ripped a shot on net, but American goalkeeper Stephanie Burry made the save. The Eagles took the 1-0 lead into the locker room at the half, as they held the 11-3 advantage in shots and the 7-1 margin in shots on goal.

American was able to put the game away in the second half with a trio of goals. Jaclyn Anspach put the Eagles up 2-0 with a goal at the 37:45 mark of the contest, while Grace Wilson added the third goal of the game for American in the 44th minute. Katie Lonsky netted the final goal of the contest at 56:00 to give the Eagles the 4-0 victory.

Holy Cross freshman goalkeeper Maya Langman (Crozet, Va.) made a career-best 12 saves on the afternoon, while Burry was called upon to make one save to earn her first shutout of the season. The Eagles held advantages in shots (24-3), shots on goal (16-1) and penalty corners (10-1).

The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, Sept. 22, when they will play Georgetown in College Park, Md., at 4:00 p.m.
