Field Hockey Blanks Sacred Heart, 1-0
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross freshman midfielder Lauren Sutherland (Watertown, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal in the 14th minute to help lead the Crusaders to a 1-0 victory over Sacred Heart in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the Hart Turf Field. With the win, Holy Cross evens it record to 2-2 on the season, while the Pioneers slip to 3-3 overall.
Sutherland's goal came on the Crusaders' first shot of the contest off a penalty corner, as she ripped the shot from the top of the circle and it deflected off Sacred Heart goaltender Mary Altepeter. The Pioneers had a pair of chances to tie the game in the first half, with two penalty corners, but Holy Cross freshman goalie Maya Langman (Crozet, Va.) stood tall and made the saves.
In the second stanza, the Crusaders upped their offensive intensity and controlled the ball for the majority of the half. Holy Cross tried to add an insurance marker during the 50th minute to the 55th minute, as the team had five penalty corners, but it could not take advantage of the opportunities. Sutherland, sophomore Katy Cronin (Franklin, Mass.) and senior captain Kelly Burke (Walpole, Mass.) all had shots on goal during the five minutes of action.
From the 62nd minute to the 64th minute, the Pioneers countered with five straight penalty corners of their own. Langman and the Crusader defense, however, stepped up and did not allow Sacred Heart to tie the game. Langman made five saves during the Pioneers' offensive barrage. Holy Cross held Sacred Heart without a shot over the finals six minutes of the contest, as it would go on to win the game, 1-0.
Langman played excellent for the Crusaders, as she made eight stops and recorded her first career shutout and victory, while Altepeter made five saves in the defeat.
Holy Cross held the 11-9 advantage in shots, including a 10-5 clip in the second half, while it also had eight shots on goal to Sacred Heart's five. The Pioneers held the 8-7 edge in penalty corners.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they will open up the Patriot League schedule on the road at American for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
