Field Hockey Defeated By Providence, 4-0
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence junior forward Daniella Bernasconi tallied her first career hat trick to lead the Friars to a 4-0 triumph over Holy Cross in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday evening at Lennon Family Field. With the win, Providence improves to 2-1 overall, while the Crusaders fall to 1-1 on the season.
Just 3:30 into the contest Bernasconi tallied her first goal of the contest off an assist by Adrienne Houle to put Providence ahead 1-0. Bernasconi scored her second marker of the game in the 13th minute, as she put back a rebound to give the Friars the 2-0 lead. Providence registered its third goal of the first half at the 30:22 mark when Kaleigh Fitzpatrick fired a shot from the right side. Holy Cross had a chance to score its first goal of the game in the 32nd minute when junior forward Molly Feit (Acton, Mass.) launched a shot on goal, but it was stopped by Friar goalkeeper Deidra Clymer.
In the second half, Bernasconi completed her hat trick with a goal in the 38th minute to put Providence ahead 4-0. The Crusaders could not break through the Friar defense for the remainder of the contest, as they would not register a shot on goal in the second half. Holy Cross sophomore midfielder Katy Cronin (Franklin, Mass.) had a chance to score in the 65th minute, but her shot missed wide.
Clymer made one save in the contest and picked up her first shutout of the season for the Friars, while Holy Cross junior goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) made five stops in the loss. Providence held advantages in shots (17-2), shots on goal (9-1) and penalty corners (8-0).
Holy Cross returns to action on Friday, Sept. 13, when it will host Harvard at the Hart Turf Field for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
