WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross field hockey freshman midfielder Lauren Sutherland (Watertown, Mass.) has been named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, for her performance in the 3-2 victory over Siena on Sept. 1.
Sutherland tallied what turned out to be a crucial insurance goal, when she scored her first career goal at the 19:52 mark of the first half to put Holy Cross up 3-1. The marker concluded a three-goal stretch for the Crusaders from the 14th minute to the 20th minute. Sutherland's goal came on her first-ever shot attempt as she had three shots on net in the contest.
She is the first Crusader to take home a Patriot League weekly award since Mackenzie Peet won rookie of the week during the 2011 season. The win over Siena marked the first time since 2007 that Holy Cross won its season and home-opening game.
Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 4, when it travels to Providence for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
