WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross field hockey head coach Zowie Tucker has announced that seniors Kelly Burke (Walpole, Mass.), Jillian Caffrey (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), Carly Grimaudo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and junior Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) will be the team captains for the 2013 season.
"It is my pleasure to announce our 2013 team captains," said Tucker. "This past off season, all four have demonstrated that they have the capability and drive to lead our team this coming fall."
Burke, who was a co-captain during the 2012 season, started in all 17 contests last year at defense. She scored her first collegiate goal in 2012 and also had a career-best eight shots on goal. In her career, she has appeared in 52 games and has one goal and one assist for three points. She was named to the 2010 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
Caffrey played in all 17 games a season ago for the Crusaders. During the 2012 season, the midfielder/defender had 15 total shots and six shots on goal. In her career, she has played in 51 total games and has two goals and one assist for five points. She has attempted 56 shots with 25 of them reaching the net. Caffrey is also a member of the Holy Cross Leadership Academy.
Grimaudo appeared in all 17 contests in 2012 and was named to the All-Patriot League first team for her performance. Last season, she scored a team and career best seven goals and three assists for 17 total points. She scored both game-winning goals for the Crusaders in 2012, including an overtime score versus Lehigh on September 29, 2012. For her career, Grimaudo has played in 44 games and has nine goals and four assists for 22 points. She was a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2012.
Matchett started in goal for all 17 games last season for Holy Cross. She compiled 128 total saves and held a 3.60 goals against average during the 2012 season. Matchett also posted a shutout on September 5, 2012 versus Siena, as the Crusaders won the game 2-0. In her career, she has appeared in 33 total games and holds a 3.81 GAA. She has played 2022:34 minutes in between the pipes for Holy Cross and has made 217 career saves. Matchett was also named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Academic Team during the 2011 season.
"All four leaders have the trust of the team and complement each other exceptionally well," Tucker said about the captains. "Their commitment and willingness for team success is a priority and it is important they continue to develop this through their summer preparation. Their roles will be essential in developing the team dynamic needed for game success this coming season."
Holy Cross opens the 2013 regular season at home on Sunday, September 1 versus Siena at 1:00 p.m.
