FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield goalkeeper Maddy Sposito made two saves and posted a shutout, to lead the Stags to a 4-0 victory over the Holy Cross field hockey team at University Field. The Crusaders fall to 1-7 on the season with the loss, while Fairfield improves to 6-3 overall.
The Stags opened the game by jumping out to an early lead with a goal in the fourth minute by Lindsey Hatch. Sophomore Sarah Wickles crossed the ball in front of the net to Hatch who put it into the top left corner. A penalty corner at the 21:21-mark taken by Emily Leo resulted in Fairfield increasing its lead 2-0. Leo passed the ball to Valerie Buurma, who set up for Felicitas Heinen for the goal.
Just over two minutes into the second half, the Stags made the score 3-0 with a goal by Nikki McLucas. Christy Starsinic passed to McLucas, who backhanded the ball into the net from eight yards out. Fairfield's final goal came when Shealyn Testa put the ball in the net unassisted at the 45:37-mark.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) finished the day with seven saves for the Crusaders.
Holy Cross returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 23, when it plays host to Dartmouth at 2:00 p.m.
