WORCESTER, Mass. — Senior Jamie Caniglia (Wayne, Pa.) highlighted he Holy Cross field hockey team's senior day, scoring her third goal of the season as the squad fell against Lehigh, 3-1, in the final game of the Patriot League season. With the result, the Crusaders combine for a record of 1-16 (0-5 Patriot League) while the Mountain Hawks go to a record of 6-12 (3-2 PL). Holy Cross finished the game with a 16-12 shots advantage.
The Crusaders put together 11 shots and nine penalty corners in the first half but did not score as Lehigh capitalized on two of its six shot attempts, earning a 2-0 lead at halftime. The goals came across at 14:04 and 33:47. Junior Megan Bourne (Lake Forest, Ill.) took a team-high five shots in the first 35 minutes while freshman goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) made one save.
Lehigh then went up 3-0 at 49:58, sneaking a shot past Matchett's left side. The Crusaders continued to maintain ball possession in the second half, earning four more penalty corners. Caniglia scored on the final corner attempt at 65:10 as freshman Mackenzie Peet (Rehoboth Beach, Del.) picked up her first career assist on the play. The goal came as the last shot taken in the game, as Holy Cross fell by the 3-1 final.
With the final result, Matchett picked up the loss, going to 1-11 on the season. She finished with four saves in the 70 minutes of action. Lehigh's goalkeeper, Sierra Segear, tallied the win, moving to 6-9. She made five saves in the contest. Bourne led the Crusaders in shots, tallying the five she attempted in the first stanza.
Holy Cross plays in its final game of the 2011 season against Yale tomorrow, Oct. 30. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Johnson Field in New Haven, Conn.
