Field Hockey Opens Up Patriot League Slate With 7-0 Defeat At Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Two Bucknell players scored two goals each as the Holy Cross field hockey team was defeated by the Bison, 7-0, on the road at Graham Field. With the final decision, the Crusaders move to a record of 1-9 (0-1 Patriot League) on the season while the Bison go to 3-6 (1-0 PL). Holy Cross has now lost three straight match-ups against Bucknell.

Bucknell took an early 1-0 lead, scoring at 15:20 mark in the first half on a close shot in front of the cage. The Bison struck again six minutes later to go ahead 2-0 as the Crusaders struggled offensively, unable to put together at shot through the first 22 minutes of play. Holy Cross found itself down 3-0 headed into the halftime as Bucknell scored one final first half goal at 31:21. The Crusaders were outshot 9-0 in the front half as freshman goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) totaled four saves.

Junior Kelly Sotsky (Wayne, N.J.) took over in the cage for the Crusaders in the second half of action. Bucknell was able to capitalize on its first shot taken, however, taking a 4-0 advantage. The Bison were able to score three more times while Holy Cross put together two shots in the final half, getting shut out by the 7-0 tally. Freshman Nina Batt (Marion, Mass.) saw her first collegiate action in the cage, but allowed the final goal.

The Bison finished with an 18-2 shots advantage and were led by Mallory Smith and Maggie Murphy who combined for four goals on four shot attempts in the game. Matchett finished with the loss, going to 1-8. She made four saves while Sotsky finished with five. Bucknell's goalie, Erica Perrine, goes to a record of 3-3.

Holy Cross will play in a midweek non-conference game next, hosting Bryant on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. on the Hart Turf Field in Worcester, Mass.
