Field Hockey Loses Final Regular Season Match-Up To Bucknell, 3-0

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Two quick goals to start the second half propelled the Bucknell Bison to a 3-0 win over the Holy Cross field hockey team in the final game of the regular season at Graham Field at Holmes Stadium Saturday. After the loss, Holy Cross completes its schedule with an overall record of 4-14 (2-3 Patriot League) while Bucknell finishes at 12-6 (4-1 Patriot League).

The Bison struck first at the 19:03 mark after they notched a penalty corner opportunity. Senior goalkeeper Kelly Casey (New Egpyt, N.J.) came up with a save on the first shot attempt, but Bucknell junior Morgan Kaufmann was able to shoot off the rebound for her fifth goal of the season, giving her team a 1-0 advantage to go into halftime. In the top half, Bucknell combined for11 shot attempts and five penalty corners while Holy Cross could not get off a shot and had one corner. Casey finished the half with four saves.

Bucknell scored again six minutes into the second half as Kaufmann tallied an assist, setting up senior Megan Krebs' fourth goal of the season. The Bison marked one last insurance goal three minutes later at 44:26 to go ahead 3-0. Holy Cross picked up the offensive tempo for a combined six shots the rest of the way out but was unable to score in the final 25 minutes, falling in their final game 3-0.  

Senior Nora Happny (Portsmouth, N.H.) led the Crusaders with two shots-on-goal. Three other players attempted shots to tally the team's total of six shots in the 70 minutes. Bucknell finished with 17 shots, eight on-goal. Casey totaled four saves in the game while junior Alanna Sikorski (Glen Gardner, N.J.) earned her first defensive save of the season.

"We knew today was going to be a tough competition for us," said head coach Alicia Hawk. "We unfortunately ran into trouble with what we've been having problems with all season, capitalizing on our big scoring opportunities. I commend the team and especially our seniors for a great season and for playing tough throughout."

With today's final, the Holy Cross field hockey team ends the 2009 regular season. After American plays against Lehigh tomorrow afternoon, the Patriot League Tournament field will be set. Check back to goholycross.com for the latest updates.
