PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Holy Cross senior Katie Aylward (Watertown, Mass.) scored the first goal of her career and also tied her season-high with three shots but it was not enough as the Holy Cross field hockey team dropped its final non-conference game against Brown, 4-2, at Warner Roof Wednesday. Holy Cross completes the non-conference schedule with an overall record of 4-13 while Brown goes to 5-10 and has two more league games to go.
The Crusaders struck first 12 minutes into the first half as senior Courtney Callahan (Acton, Mass.) broke her scoring drought with her ninth goal of the season, assisted by junior Alanna Sikorski (Glen Gardner, N.J.). The Brown Bears tied the score at 15:54 as sophomore Kit Masini notched her sixth goal of the season on a short pass from fellow sophomore Laua Iacovetti. It was at 20:38 when Aylward tallied her first goal in a Crusaders uniform to give the team a 2-1 advantage, assisted by sophomore Jamie Caniglia (Wayne, Pa.). Defense couldn't make a stand in the final 15 minutes, however, as Brown was able to tie the score at 2-2 before the half on senior Whitney Knowlton's second goal of the season.
Holy Cross was able to outshoot Brown in the second half, 8-3, but it was the Brown Bears who made their shots count, tallying two more scores at 38:38 and 60:34 to finish with the 4-2 victory. Brown finished the game with a 16-11 shots advantage after taking 13 shots in the first half. Both teams recorded three penalty corners.
Junior Kara Gonnerman (St. Louis, Mo.) led the Crusaders with four shots, two on-goal. Senior goalkeeper Kelly Casey (New Egypt, N.J.) made three saves on seven shots on goal. Callahan's goal gives her a team-leading 19 points on the season, which is also a career-best.
The Crusaders will play in their final game of the season against Bucknell on Saturday, Oct. 31. The game will be played at the Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, home to Bucknell's field hockey and women's lacrosse teams starting at 12:00 p.m. The Bison currently have a 3-1 Patriot League record while Holy Cross is at 2-2 and will aim for a win to qualify for a Patriot League Championship berth.
