- The Holy Cross field hockey team jump starts its 2009 campaign with three games over the next week. The Crusaders begin their season away on Thursday, Sept. 3 against the Connecticut Huskies, who are ranked fifth in the nation according to the 2009 Kookaburra / NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll. The game starts at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. On Saturday, Sept. 5, the team hosts Harvard in the season home opener. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. at the Hart Turf Field in Worcester, Mass. The team will end the week away at No.14-ranked Boston College on Sunday, Sept. 6. Held at the Boston College Field Hockey Field in Chestnut Hill, Mass., the contest will start at 3:00 p.m.
- The Crusaders return 13 letterwinners from last year's squad and welcome seven newcomers. Last week the team voted seniors Kaitlyn Barnes (Honesdale, Pa.) and Courtney Callahan (Acton, Mass.) as co-captains for the 2009 season. Barnes and Callahan started every game last season and have combined for 96 total starts over their careers.
- Leading the offense for the Crusaders will be juniors Kara Gonnerman (St. Louis, Mo.) and Alanna Sikorski (Glen Gardner, N.J.). Gonnerman ranked second on the team last season with seven goals and 14 points. Sikorski notched three goals and six assists for 12 points (third on the squad). Barnes and fellow senior Katie Aylward (Watertown, Mass.) will lead the backfield after combining for three defensive saves last season.
- Second-year head coach Alicia Hawk's team had a 7-11 overall record last season with a 2-3 record in the Patriot League. She had three athletes named to the All-Patriot League teams and also coached the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year. This season Hawk looks to help her team contend for a Patriot League Tournament appearance. The Crusaders last qualified for the tournament in 2006.
