WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross women's basketball received 77 points and one first place vote, placing the Crusaders third in the Patriot Preseason Poll, voted upon by head coaches and sports information directors. Sophomore Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) was one of five players selected to the Preseason All-Patriot League team.
Holy Cross finished the 2006-2007 season 15-18 and 6-8 in the league, finishing third. The Crusaders defeated Lafayette (64-49) and Lehigh (65-62, OT) in the post-season, clinching the Patriot League Championship with a 56-48 victory over American. Closing out last season, the Crusaders lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Duke, 81-44. Holy Cross leads the Patriot League with 11 Championship titles, including back-to-back titles during the 2005 and 2006 season.
Last season O'Dell was named the 2006-2007 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and Tournament Most Valuable Player, averaging 12.4 points per game. O'Dell was ranked second on the team in points wit 396, tallied 126 rebounds, 76 assists, and 41 steals with a .428 field goal percentage. During the season, O'Dell averaged 34.2 minutes played, 12.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.3 steals, and 2.7 three-point field goals per game.
Bucknell took the top seed with 92 points and 10 first place votes, followed by Army with 83 points and four first place votes. Coming in fourth was American with 62 points and one first place vote, Lehigh fifth (46), followed by Lafayette and Navy tied with 33 points, and Colgate (22).
The 2007-2008 women's basketball season will kick off on Sunday, Nov. 11 as Holy Cross hosts Vermont in non-conference action at 1:30 p.m.
