WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross head women's basketball coach Bill Gibbons and athletic director Richard M. Regan, Jr., have announced the Crusaders' schedule for the 2008-2009 season, which is slated to begin on November 15. The Crusaders will play a number of challenging non-conference games, while taking part in the Mildred & Roger L. White Invitational at Northwestern and the Hawk Classic at St. Joseph's. The home schedule will include a total of 13 games at the Hart Center this year.
Holy Cross begins the season with an exhibition game against Assumption (Nov. 11) followed by four-game home stand, with its season opener versus Yale (Nov. 15), followed by Boston College (Nov. 18), Harvard (Nov. 20) and Saint Peter's (Nov. 25). The Crusaders will take to the road for their next two games to play in the Northwestern University Tournament (Nov. 29-30).
"It will be nice to follow our exhibition game versus Assumption, benefiting the Mercy Centre with four big home games, including Boston College, to start our 08-09 season," said Gibbons.
Holy Cross continues its non-conference competition with a six-game road trip, traveling to Connecticut (Dec. 3), Vermont (Dec. 6), Rhode Island (Dec. 9), Northeastern (Dec. 22), and concluding with the Hawk Classic (Dec. 28-29).
"I believe that our December road trip, including UConn and two competitive tournaments at Northwestern and St Joe's, will definitely prepare us, as we strive to recapture the Patriot League Title, in a league that will be the most competitive it has been in the 19 years of basketball competition," said Gibbons.
The Crusaders return to the Hart Center for a contest against Maine (Jan. 2) and then travel to Dartmouth (Jan. 4). Holy Cross concludes its non-conference play at home with a game against Bryant (Jan. 7)
Holy Cross opens Patriot League play on the road against Lafayette (Jan. 10), followed by a three-game home stand versus Army (Jan. 14), Bucknell (Jan. 17) and Navy (Jan. 21). On the road for the next two games, the Crusaders will play American (Jan. 24) and Colgate (Jan. 28). Contests against Lehigh (Jan. 31) and Lafayette (Feb. 7) will be at the Hart Center, followed by road games at Army (Feb. 11), Bucknell (Feb. 14) and Navy (Feb. 18).
Finishing up the regular season at the Hart Center, the Crusaders will play a two-game home stand against American (Feb. 21) and Colgate (Feb. 25). Closing out play on the road, Holy Cross will travel to Leigh (Feb. 28) to conclude the regular season.
Holy Cross is coming off the 2007-2008 season during which it posted overall record of 19-13 (10-4 Patriot League). Gibbons enters is 24th season with the Crusaders this year and Holy Cross returns Patriot League Player of the Year Brianna McFadden, all-league selection, Bethany O'Dell, and All-Rookie selection, Elizabeth Campbell. The Crusaders have made it to the Patriot League championship game an unprecedented 15 times in the 18 year history of the league, capturing the title on 11 occasions.
