WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior guard Jessica Conte (New Canaan, Conn.), a member of the Holy Cross women's basketball team, is the 2005-2006 recipient of the Samantha Vellaccio Award. The award was presented at the 52nd Annual Varsity Club Dinner, held at the Hogan Campus Center on Saturday, May 6.
The Vellaccio Award is presented annually to the varsity women's basketball player who best exemplifies the mission of Holy Cross both on and off the court. A tri-captain of this year's team, Conte averaged 8.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.1 steals and 1.6 assists per game, while leading the Crusaders to an overall record of 16-14 and a second place finish in the Patriot League.
Over the course of her career, she totaled 737 points and 319 rebounds, while her 120 games played tied for the third-most in school history. Off the court, Conte played a large role in Holy Cross' involvement with the Mercy Centre, a private day school located in Worcester that services students aged 6-22 with special needs.
