Worcester, Mass. - Senior Maggie Fontana (Barrington, Ill.) earned her first Patriot League Player of the Week selection of the season after her performances against Lafayette and Lehigh this past weekend in which Holy Cross went 2-0 and extended its winning streak to seven games. With Sunday's win over Lehigh, the Crusaders also claimed the top spot in conference play with a 7-0 record.
Fontana scored 14 points and pulled down six rebounds, to go along with three assists and a steal in HC's 70-48 win over Lafayette on Friday. The 5-foot-11 guard/forward then had game-highs of 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the Crusaders to a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Lehigh on Sunday. Fontana was a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe against the Mountain Hawks, setting a new single-game Holy Cross women's record, passing Beth Godfrey's ('93) 10-for-10 performance vs. Indiana in 1993. Her 21 points on Sunday was also a season-high for the Illinois native.
Fontana is currently tied for second on the team in scoring (9.6 ppg), and is third on the team in rebounding (5.0 rpg). She recently broke into the Top 10 of HC's all-time scoring list (1,424 points), and is currently 16th on the Patriot League all-time scoring list. Fontana is also steadily moving up a number of other all-time lists, currently ranked 11th in HC history and 18th in League history in rebounding, and 8th (HC) and 11th (PL) in assists. Fontana is also just five steals away from breaking into the Top 3 in Holy Cross history for steals.
The Crusaders put their seven-game winning streak on the line this weekend with a 7:00 p.m. tip Friday night with Navy, and a 1:00 match-up with American on Sunday.
