KINGSTON, R.I. - Sophomore guard Whitney Fremeau (Manchester, N.H.) recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Holy Cross women's basketball dropped a 60-53 decision to Rhode Island on Tuesday night at the Ryan Center. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 1-8 on the season while the Rams improve to 4-5.
Rhode Island started with a 16-5 run in the first 11 minutes as Megan Shoniker scored eight points. Holy Cross got within 10 of Rhode Island (16-6), but the Rams continued their aggressive offensive play, expanding their leads to 21 points (29-8). Rhode Island closed out the half ahead of the Crusaders by 19 points, 32-13.
Holy Cross opened the second half with a 6-2 run, bringing the Crusaders within 12 points, 36-22. The Rams pushed back to get a 20-point lead (57-37) with 3:12 left in the game. Holy Cross responded with a 12-0 run, led by junior guard Christy Cushnie (Vienna, Va.) with five points. Rhode Island halted the Crusaders' scoring to finish with a seven-point lead, edging out a 60-53 victory. Holy Cross outscored the Rams, 40-28, in the second half.
Sophomore forward Alyssa May (Oradell, N.J.) finished with nine rebounds, seven points, three steals and one assist while sophomore forward Elizabeth Campbell (Louisville, Ky.) had nine points, two blocks, one steal and one assist. Cushnie tallied seven points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal. Shoniker led the Rams' with 29 points, three assists, two steals and two rebounds.
Holy Cross returns to action on Monday, Dec. 22, traveling to Northeastern for a 2:00 p.m. game.
