BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont guard Courtnay Pilypaitis recorded a triple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, to lead the Catamounts to a 71-53 victory over the Holy Cross women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Patrick Gymnasium. Senior guard Jessica Pearson (West Chester, Pa.) led the Crusaders with 11 points and freshman center Marygrace Jay (Vienna, Va.) added seven points, as both players set new career highs. With the loss, Holy Cross falls to 1-7 on the season while the Catamounts improve to 5-2.
Vermont opened the game with a 10-0 run, including a pair of three-pointers by Pilypaitis. Holy Cross responded with a 5-2 spurt to cut the lead to seven points, but a few minutes later the Catamounts went on a 10-1 run to bring their advantage back to double-figures. Vermont eventually took a 16-point lead (33-17) into the locker room.
The Catamounts opened the second half with a 15-6 spurt, and eventually increased their lead to 30 points (62-32) with 6:44 left to play. The Crusaders closed out the game with a 21-9 run, as Vermont won by 18 points.
In addition to her 11 points, Pearson finished with three steals, two rebounds and two assists in a career-high 25 minutes played. Freshman guard Meredith Ward (Westerly, R.I.) added seven points, five rebounds and two assists for Holy Cross
Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, December 9, traveling to Rhode Island for a 5:30 p.m. game.
