WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman guard Alyssa May (Oradell, N.J.) scored 11 points in the second half but it wasn't enough as the Holy Cross women's basketball lost to Bucknell, 57-45, in the Patriot League championship game at the Hart Center tonight. The Crusaders finish the season 19-13 while Bucknell improves to 16-15.
Back and forth traffic on the hardwood gave room for just a one point lead for the opening minutes of the first half. Sophomore guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.), hit a jumper to put the Crusaders up by three (9-6) with 14:29 left in the first half. Bucknell broke free of a 15-14 deficit, going on a 17-3 run as Amanda Brown scored five points and Cosima Higham had four points. The Bison led Holy Cross, 31-17, heading into halftime.
May scored first in second half to bring the Crusaders within 12 (31-19) but Bucknell retaliated to cushion itself 17 ahead of Holy Cross, 43-26, with 9:36 left to play. The Crusaders chipped away at Bucknell's lead, getting within seven, 43-36, as May scored seven points and freshman center Elizabeth Campbell (Louisville, Ky.) had four.
The Bison answered back with a quick 7-0 run with 4:27 but a layup by May and a shot from long range by sophomore guard Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) got Holy Cross back within nine points of the Bison, 50-41. Bucknell controlled the remaining three minutes of the game, securing the 57-45 victory.
In addition to her 11 points, May had seven rebounds, two assists and two steals while McFadden chipped in seven points, five rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Laura Aloisi (Nashua, N.H.) led Holy Cross in rebounds, grabbing eight while recording six points, four assists and four steals.
O'Dell and McFadden were named to the 2008 Patriot League All-Tournament Team for the second year in a row.
