WEST POINT, N.Y. - Junior forward Kathy Gruzynski (Elk Grove, Ill.) scored 16 points including 10 in the second half as the second-seeded Holy Cross women's basketball team downed seventh-seeded Navy, 67-53, during the 2008 Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals today at Christl Arena.
Holy Cross jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the first nine minutes but Navy went on a 7-0 run led by Angela Myers with five points. Holding the Crusaders scoreless for over five minutes, Navy got back into the game, tying the game 17-17.
With 1:27 left in the first half, Holy Cross broke free from a short one-point lead, 22-21, to rally six more points led by sophomore guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) who went 4-for-4 from the free throw line, taking a 28-24 half time lead.
McFadden led the Crusaders with eights points at the break while K.C. Gordon and Myers scored five points each.
Gruzynski put Holy Cross, 38-28, leading a scoring 10 points in the opening five minutes of the second half. Sophomore guard Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) put up seven points and McFadden added a pair of shots from the free throw line, making the score 57-38, with 7:18 left in the game. The Mids got within 12 points (60-48) of Holy Cross, but the Crusaders paced the offense to finish with a 14-point cushion to end the game, 67-53.
In addition to her 16 points, Gruzynski tied the team-high in rebounds with five while McFadden finished with 12 points including going 9-for-10 from the free throw line while chipping in three rebounds and two steals. O'Dell also shined for Holy Cross as she recorded 10 points, four rebounds, four steals, and one assist. The Crusaders scored 39 points in the second half, shooting 48.4% from the floor.
Holy Cross faces third-seeded Lehigh in the semifinals tomorrow, March 9, at 3:30 p.m.
