Women's Basketball Falls To Army, 54-47, In Patriot League Quarterifnals

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) totaled 15 points but the fourth-seeded Holy Cross women's basketball team fell to No. 5 Army, 54-47, during the 2009 Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals this afternoon at Stabler Arena.

Army jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the first nine minutes of the game with nine points scored from long range by Nalini Hawkins. Holy Cross retaliated with a 16-3 run with sophomore forward Elizabeth Campbell (Louisville, Ky.) and McFadden scoring six points each, lifting the Crusaders to a 24-18 lead. With 1:08 left in the half, Army fought back to get within one point (24-23) but a jumper by junior guard Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) put Holy Cross ahead by the Crusaders ahead, 26-23, at halftime.

The Black Knights opened the second half with a 9-1 run, grabbing a five-point lead, 32-27. Trailing by one point (32-31) for almost three minutes of play, O'Dell was fouled on a successful shot, making a three-point play to give Holy Cross a 34-32 lead. Army turned up the heat on offense with a 13-4 run, grabbing its largest lead of the game, 49-40. With less than one minute remaining in the game, Holy Cross got within four points (51-45) but would get no closer as the Black Knights finished with a seven-point victory, 54-47.

In addition to her 15 points, McFadden finished with four rebounds, two assists and two steals while Campbell grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and had eight points, two blocks and one steal. Sophomore forward Alyssa May (Oradell, N.J.) totaled nine points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Hawkins led the Black Knights with 24 points on the game.

Holy Cross finishes the 2008-2009 season with an overall record of 13-17 and 8-6 in the Patriot league.
