WEST POINT, N.Y. - Sophomore guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) had 14 points but it wasn't enough as Holy Cross dropped a 57-41 Patriot League decision to Army at the Christl Arena. The Crusaders are now 8-9 and 1-1 in the Patriot League snapping a three-game winnings streak while the Black Knights improve to 11-6 and remain undefeated in league play with a 2-0 record.
An early lead bounced between the team but Army took control, going on a 13-4 run, led by Alex McGuire who had seven points and Margaree King who scored six points in one minute. With 8:59 left to play in the first half, the Black Knights led Holy Cross, 24-13.
The Crusaders slowly chipped away at the Army lead, but the Black Knights answered back, cushioning themselves 10 points ahead (30-20) with 3:27 remaining in the half. A three-pointer by McFadden and two shots from the charity stripe by sophomore guard Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) cut the Crusader deficit to five points, closing out the first half.
O'Dell led the scoring for Holy Cross during the first half with eight points while freshman center Elizabeth Campbell (Louisville, Ky.) grabbed seven rebounds. McGuire had 10 points for Army while Courtney Wright grabbed eight boards.
Each team put up five points in just under six minute to start the second half as the Black Knights maintained a five point lead over Holy Cross, 35-30. The Crusaders continued to remain five shy of reaching Army but a quick 9-0 run by the Black Knights led by Cara Enright with four points secured the lead and the league win for Ary.
In addition to her 14 points, McFadden finished the night with four rebounds, two steals and an assist. Campbell grabbed a career-high nine boards and chipped in four points.
The Black Knights had four players score in double figures as Stephanie Stone and McGuire each had 12 points, King scored 11, and Enright recording 10. Wright recorded a season-high 16 rebounds for Army.
The Crusaders travel to Bucknell on Sunday, January 20 for a game scheduled at 12:00 p.m.
