Alex Smith Named Preseason All-Patriot League, Crusaders Voted Fourth
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross women's basketball senior captain Alex Smith (Delran, N.J.) was named preseason All-Patriot League in a vote by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors. As a team, the Crusaders were tabbed fourth in the 2013-2014 preseason poll with 112 points.
Named first team All-Patriot League the last two seasons, Smith ranked first in the conference in 2012-2013 in points per game (14.5) and three-pointers made per contest (2.9). She also averaged 4.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game a season ago. Last year, Smith was the 29th player in Holy Cross history to reach the 1,000 career points milestone and currently stands at 16th on the all-time scoring list. For her career, Smith has compiled 1,208 points, 403 assists, 351 rebounds and 156 steals. She is 27 three-pointers away from breaking the Patriot League all-time record of 286 made in a career.
Three-time defending champion Navy was selected as the preseason favorite with 157 points and 14 first-place votes. Last year's regular season champion, Army, was tabbed second in the poll with 133 points and three first-place votes, while new Patriot League member and 2012-2013 WNIT participant, Boston University, finished third with 128 points and three-first place votes. Holy Cross was selected fourth with 112 points, while Lehigh earned the fifth spot with 97 points. American (87 points), Bucknell (62 points), Loyola (Md.) (54 points), Lafayette (37 points) and Colgate (33 points) fill out the remaining five spots in the poll. Navy senior forward Jade Geif was voted Preseason Player of the Year for the third time in her career.
The Crusaders will host an exhibition game against Assumption at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Hart Center before the 2013-2014 season officially begins on Friday, Nov. 8, as Holy Cross will entertain Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m.
