WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross women's basketball senior forward Amy Lepley (Norfolk, Mass.) and junior guard Alex Smith (Delran, N.J.) have been named preseason All-Patriot League in a vote by conference head coaches and sports information directors. As a team, Holy Cross was picked to finish third in the 2012-2013 Patriot League preseason poll, receiving 70 points with one first place vote.
Last season, Smith was named to the first team All-Patriot League for her play as the team's point guard. Smith was second on the squad in scoring, with 12.5 points per game, and first in assists, averaging 5.5 per game. The assists mark was tops in the Patriot League last year as she ranked 18th in the NCAA. She improved her three-pointers made mark from 2010-11, as she converted on 85 treys, which led the Patriot League and is second on the Holy Cross single-season record book.
Lepley, who was named to the second team All-Patriot League a season ago, started all 34 games for the Crusaders. She led the team with 13.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Her scoring average was third in the Patriot League last year, while her rebounds mark was ninth. Lepley scored a career high 24 points last season in helping the Crusaders knock off top-seeded American in the Patriot League semifinals.
Defending Patriot League Champion Navy was selected as the preseason favorite to capture the league title with 89 points and eight first place votes. American was picked second after finishing last season with a perfect 14-0 record in league games as it acquired 85 points and six first place votes. Mid Jade Geif was picked as the Preseason Player of the Year, as she donned those honors a season ago. Filling the final five spots were Army (66 points; one first place vote), Lehigh (58 points), Lafayette (30 points), and Bucknell and Colgate (25 points each).
The Crusaders will host an exhibition game against Assumption at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4 at the Hart Center before the 2012-2013 season officially begins on Nov. 9, as Holy Cross will host Yale at 7:00 p.m.
