Whitney Fremeau & Alex Smith Nab All-Patriot League Honors

WORCESTER, Mass. Senior captain Whitney Fremeau (Manchester, N.H.) has been named to the 2010-2011 first team All-Patriot League women's basketball squad, as voted by the conference's head coaches. Fremeau earns the first team honor for the first time in her career after being voted to the second team as a junior. Freshman Alex Smith (Delran, N.J.) was named to the All-Rookie Squad while Fremeau was also voted to the first annual women's basketball Academic All-Patriot League team.

Fremeau has averaged 14.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game this season, ranking first on the team and second in the league in points per game. She was even more impressive against Patriot League opponents, averaging 16.3 points and 4.9 rebounds in conference contests. She hit the 1,000-point mark against Army on Feb. 9 and now has 1,080 points in her career, ranking 21st on the all-time scorers list. She posted a total of 24 double-digit scoring affairs in 29 games this season, leading the team in points scored in 13 games. She owns the best field goal percentage amongst starters this season, shooting 42.3 percent (169 of 400) and scored a career-high 26 points against Lehigh. In her 114 career games played, Fremeau adds 455 rebounds and 213 assists to her 1,080 career points.

Fremeau was also selected to the inaugural five-person Academic All-Patriot League team, as voted on by league sports information directors. To be eligible for the Academic All-Patriot League team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Fremeau boasts a team-high 3.46 GPA and will graduate with a degree in Economics this May.

Smith, who ranks second on the team in scoring (11.3 points per game), was named to the All-Rookie squad, joining American's Alexis Dobbs, Bucknell's Shelby Romine, Lafayette's Danielle Fiacco and Navy's Jade Geif. Smith also ranks second in the Holy Cross single season records list for three-pointers made after sinking 80 three-pointers this season.

Holy Cross (10-19, 6-8 Patriot League) will play as the No. 6 seed in the 2011 Patriot League Women's Basketball Tournament, matching up with American (20-8, 10-4 PL), the No. 3 seed. The quarterfinals will be played on the home court of the higher seed as the Crusaders will travel to Washington, D.C. for a 2:00 p.m. contest at Bender Arena on Saturday, March 5.
