WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Whitney Fremeau (Manchester, N.H) led the Holy Cross women's basketball team with 15 points and five rebounds, boosting the squad to a 57-47 win against Bucknell at the Hart Center. With the victory, the Crusaders climb to a record of 6-12 (2-1 PL) on the season, while the Bison collect a record of 3-12 (0-3 PL). With her 15 points, Fremeau has now led the team in scoring for the fourth time in five games after making six of her 15 field goal attempts.
The Crusaders and Bison traded baskets to open up the first half, finding themselves tied, 5-5, after three minutes of play. Holy Cross then hit three consecutive three point shots from Fremeau and freshmen Christine Ganser (Needham, Mass.) and Alex Smith (Delran, N.J.), taking a 14-7 lead at 14:09. After Bucknell scored five unanswered points, the Crusaders came back with a 7-0 run, including Smith's second three-point shot of the game, and regaining a 21-12 edge at 10:33. With five minutes left in the first half, Smith gave Holy Cross its first double-digit lead, 27-16. Freshman Brisje Malone (Springfield, Mass.) followed with a jump shot to give the Crusaders their largest advantage, 29-16, at 4:09. Three offensive rebounds in a row by the Bison allowed the points margin to drop back within eight points, 29-21 at 2:20. Holy Cross remained scoreless until one minute was left on the clock as Fremeau layed in a shot to make the score 31-21. Bucknell added the last basket of the half, as the Crusaders went in to the locker room up 31-23. Holy Cross shot 48 percent in the front half, sinking 12 of their 25 shot attempts. Bucknell shot 28.6 from the floor (10 for 35). Smith led the squad with nine points on 3-for-3 shooting.
The teams once again traded baskets to start the second half, as Holy Cross stayed ahead by nine points, 37-28. Bucknell would inch closer, 37-30, but Holy Cross always had an answer, moving back ahead by 11 points, 41-30, after sophomore Kaitlin Cole (Springfield, Pa.) knocked down her first basket of the game with 13:47 on the clock. Consecutive lay-ups from sophomore Amy Lepley (Norfolk, Mass.) and Fremeau allowed the Crusaders to then pull ahead by a game-high 15 points, 45-30, at 11:53. Junior Meredith Ward (Westerly, R.I.) put Holy Cross over the 50-point mark with a three-point shot with just over eight minutes to play in the game, tallying the score at 52-37. Bucknell put together a 10-0 run to get within five points, 52-47, at the one minute mark as Holy Cross found itself in a seven minute scoring drought. Bucknell was forced to foul the rest of the way, as the Crusaders sank five of their six tries, winning by the final 57-47 score.
Smith finished with 11 points, including three three-point shots, to round out Holy Cross' double-digit performances. Malone tallied a season-high nine rebounds in the win to lead the team in rebounding for the first time this season. In the game, the Crusaders shot 42.6 percent (20-for-47) while the Bison shot 32.2 percent (20-for-62). Bucknell finished with a 57-42 rebounding edge and was led by senior forward Cosima Higham with 11 points and eight rebounds. The Crusaders held Bucknell's top scorer, freshman Shelby Romine, to six points, her lowest point total of the season.
Holy Cross wraps up its three-game home stand on Wednesday, Jan. 19 against Navy. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m. against the Midshipmen (9-7, 2-0 PL) at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass.
