WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross Director of Athletics, Richard M. Regan Jr. announced today that Holy Cross and women's head basketball coach Bill Gibbons have agreed to a contract extension through the 2012-2013 season.
"Bill is the winningest basketball coach in Holy Cross history," Regan said. "And I look forward to him continuing to build the tradition of Crusader women's basketball of which he has been an intergral part during his first 25 years as head coach."
Gibbons will be entering into his 26th year as head coach of the Crusaders, during which his teams have won 11 Patriot League regular season championships, 12 Patriot League Tournament Championships and made 12 postseason appearances (11 NCAA's and one WNIT), in his first 25 years, his Crusader teams have won 20 or more game 16 times.
"I am appreciative for the opportunity to continue to serve Holy Cross and continue to attract first class young ladies to our program who will represent our college in an exemplary manner both on and off the court," Gibbons said. "My staff and I are committed to success on the basketball court and in the character and life building process of our student-athletes."
As the sixth coach in the program's history, Gibbons has enjoyed the longest tenure in the position. He has led the Holy Cross women's basketball program to more victories than any other coach, and is the winningest coach in Holy Cross basketball history with 486 victories. He trails only legendary coach Jack Barry, who tallied 616 victories, for most wins in Holy Cross Athletics history.
During Gibbons tenure at Holy Cross the Crusader program has produced four Academic All-Americans and more than 10 Academic All-District picks. In addition every student-athlete who has played for four seasons under Gibbons' direction has earned her degree.
