Women's Basketball Rallies Past Bucknell, 55-42
LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Holy Cross women's basketball team used an entire team effort, including points scored by all five starters, to top Bucknell, 55-42, at Sojka Pavilion. With the win, the Crusaders collect a 5-13 overall record and break into the Patriot League play wins column with a 1-2 league record. Bucknell goes to 4-12 overall (0-3 Patriot League). Most impressively, senior Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) scored a team-high 16 points in 19 minutes to vault the Crusaders to a win.
With the score tied at 4-4, Bucknell used a 9-0 run to pull ahead 13-4 at 10:14 of the first half. O'Dell notched her first basket of the game to break the run, but the Bison continued to pull away, earning their largest lead of the game, 18-6, at 9:07. The Crusaders then put together a 6-0 run behind lay ups by freshman Kaitlin Cole (Springfield, Pa.) and sophomore Meredith Ward (Westerly, R.I.), bringing the score to 18-12 at 7:28. Bucknell was able to maintain a double-digit lead until just under the three minute mark before Holy Cross turned up the offense, compiling an 11-0 run, including three consecutive three-point shots by senior Christy Cushnie (Vienna, Va.), Ward and O'Dell. With the late run, the Crusaders found themselves down by just one-point, 25-24, heading in to the locker room. Holy Cross shot 29 percent in the half while Bucknell tallied a 42 field goal percentage.
The Crusaders used a 7-2 run to start the second half, earning their first lead of the game, 29-27. O'Dell's second three-point shot of the game gave the team its first two-possession lead, 32-29 at 15:37. The entire team combined for strong shooting and stellar defense the rest of the half, as the Crusaders never lost the two-possession edge. The teams traded baskets throughout, with Holy Cross earning a five-point advantage, 45-40 with just under four minutes to play. Junior Whitney Fremeau (Manchester, N.H.) went two-for-two from the field for four points to lead all scorers in the final minutes, giving the team a seven-point lead. Six-consecutive free throws sealed the deal as Holy Cross took home a 55-42 road victory.
Following O'Dell's 16 points, three starters, Cushnie, Fremeau and Ward scored eight points each on a combined nine-for-25 field goal outing. Freshman Amy Lepley (Norfolk, Mass.) led the defense with nine rebounds while Fremeau notched a team-leading eight assists for her career-high. Bucknell was led by junior Joyce Novacek and sophomore Trisha Krewson, who scored 10 points apiece.
Holy Cross rounds out its three-game road stretch with a visit to Annapolis, Md. to take on Navy. The game will be held at Alumni Hall beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Jan. 20. The Crusaders hold a 37-5 all-time record against the Midshipmen.
