Briana McFadden Named To Preseason All-Patriot League Team
WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross women's basketball senior guard Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) has been named preseason All-Patriot League in a vote by conference head coaches and sports information directors today. As a team, Holy Cross was picked to finish in a tie for second place with American in the 2009-2010 Patriot League preseason poll, receiving 76 votes.
"I am very happy and proud for Briana," said head coach Bill Gibbons. "However, I know that the team's performance and her contribution to our team effort will trump the importance of individual accolades."
Last season, McFadden earned first team All-Patriot League accolades and was also named to the conference's All-Tournament team. She led the team and league with an average of 15.3 points per game, while averaging 4.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest. McFadden finished the season ranked second in the league in minutes played, sixth in the league in free throw percentage and 10th in steals. She led the team in scoring 14 times last year and scored in double-figures 24 times, finishing the season as the school's 25th player and only the eighth junior to score 1,000 career points.
Defending Patriot League champion Lehigh was chosen as the preseason favorite to capture the league title as Mountain Hawk senior Erica Prosser was voted Preseason Player of the Year. Lehigh received 13 first-place votes and a total of 97 points. American and Holy Cross followed in a tie for second with 76 points apiece. Filling the final five spots was Navy (54 points), Bucknell (52 points), Army (50 points), Colgate (22 points) and Lafayette (21 points).
"The Patriot League has continued to grow in terms of parity over my 24 seasons of coaching," said Gibbons. "I think it will be a great league race, with all of the teams bringing their best efforts to the table. I believe that you can't count anyone out in this league and I am excited to see the result."
The Crusaders will host an exhibition game against Assumption at 7:00 p.m. on Nov. 3 at the Hart Center before the 2009-2010 season officially begins on Nov.13 at Yale.
