WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross head women's basketball coach Bill Gibbons and athletic director Richard M. Regan, Jr., have announced the Crusaders' schedule for the 2009-2010 season, with the first game slated for Friday, Nov. 13. Highlighting the schedule is a game against defending NCAA Champion Connecticut at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass., on Friday, Nov. 20, as well as participation in the Maine Classic and Monmouth Holiday Tournament.
Holy Cross begins the season with three games on the road. The team travels to Yale on Nov. 13, then on to Central Connecticut (Nov. 16) before continuing on to Bryant Nov. 18. The Crusaders will then serve as the home team against Connecticut on Nov. 20, with the match-up being held at the DCU Center. The team continues to travel throughout the month of November as it goes to Boston College on Nov. 24 and up to Orono, Maine to compete in the Maine Classic Nov. 27-28.
"We're excited about our schedule," said Gibbons. "We've added a couple more New England-area games with New Hampshire and Central Connecticut. Of course, a highlight for us is the chance to play the undefeated, six-time National Champion Connecticut Huskies in Worcester. We go on the road a lot early, but I'm confident that our five seniors will have us ready for that test."
Holy Cross continues its non-conference competition away at Harvard on Dec. 2. The team's first true home game will be held on Dec. 5 against Northeastern. One more Hart Center game against Vermont (Dec. 7) fills out the December schedule as the squad will then play at New Hampshire (Dec. 20) and in the Monmouth Holiday Tournament (Dec. 29-30).
The Crusaders return to the Hart Center for three straight contests against Dartmouth (Jan. 2) Rhode Island (Jan. 5) and their first Patriot League opponent, Lafayette (Jan. 9). Patriot League play heats up in January as the team travels to Army (Jan. 13), Bucknell (Jan. 16) and Navy (Jan. 20). Holy Cross will face American in the second Patriot League home contest on Jan. 24 followed by Colgate at home on Jan. 27.
The team ends its January slate away at Lehigh on Jan. 30 and begins the month of February on the road at Lafayette (Feb. 6). The Crusaders return home for three more Patriot League contests against Army (Feb. 10), Bucknell (Feb. 13) and Navy (Feb. 17). Rounding out the regular season are games at American (Feb. 20), at Colgate (Feb. 24) and ending at the Hart Center on Feb. 27 against Lehigh. Holy Cross will also play host to the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the Patriot League Tournament on March 6 and 7.
"We're also very excited to host the Patriot League tournament at the Hart Center," said Gibbons. "It offers us a great opportunity to show the entire League how good of a host we can be."
Holy Cross is coming off the 2008-2009 season where it posted an overall record of 13-17 (8-6 Patriot League). Gibbons enters a milestone 25th season with the Crusaders in 2009-2010 as Holy Cross returns first team All-Patriot League selection Briana McFadden (Wheaton, Md.) and second team All-Patriot League selection Bethany O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.).
