New Britain, Conn. - The Holy Cross men's and women's cross country teams kicked off the 2005 season with strong showings at the Blue Devil Invitational, hosted by Central Connecticut State University. Led by senior captain Timothy Murphy (Wayne, N.J.) the men finished second and the women placed third behind the running of freshman Elizabeth Alizzi (Syosset, N.Y.).
Murphy's third place individual time of 28:31 in the 8K race paced the Crusader men. Juniors Stephen Kress (Portland, Maine) and John Ortolani (Williamsville, N.Y.) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, three seconds behind their teammate. Rounding out the scoring were Patrick Clifford (Hayworth, N.J.) and James Lundy (Katonah, N.Y.) with times of 29:53 and 30:00, respectively.
On the women's 5K course, a 10th place showing was turned in by the newcomer Alizzi with a time of 20:14. Four consecutive Crusader women between the times of 20:19 and 20:25 rounded out the field for Holy Cross: Colleen Spilka (Hamden, Conn.), Alexandra Swiatocha (Mahopac, N.Y.), Megan Murphy (Spokane, Wash.) and Christie Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine).
Overall the men finished with 46 points in second place, while the women finished third with 76 points. Central Connecticut State won on the men's side and University of Connecticut took the women's race.
Both Holy Cross teams with continue action next Saturday, September 10, in Waterford, Conn. at the Connecticut College Invitational. The start time will be 11:00 am.
