WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's and women's cross country teams participated in the 100th running of the New England Championship on Sunday afternoon at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass. The women's team finished 16th of 37 teams as junior Emily Hughes (Milton, Mass.) took the top finish for the Crusaders while the men's team took 21st of 37 teams with sophomore John Cicchitti (Westminster, Pa.) leading the team across the finish line.
Hughes finished 27th of 251 runners with a time of 18:01.28 in the 5K race. FreshmanCaroline Carley (Barrington, Ill.) was the next Crusader finisher and top freshman, recording a time of 18:55.11 and taking 97th place. Junior Sandra van den Heuvel (Nashua, N.H.) followed van den Heuvel taking 116th with a time of 19:07.04 while junior Amanda Waldron (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore Abigail Mitchell (Manchester, N.H.) rounded out the top five for the Crusaders with times of 19:13.85 and 19:32.18, respectively.
Cicchitti finished 21st of 261 runners in the men's 8K race with a personal best time of 24:58.82. Freshman Dennis Muldoon (Weymouth, Mass.) and junior Greg Hamalian (West Bridgewater, Mass.) were the second and third finishers for the Crusaders with times of 26:06.16 and 26:06.43, respectively. Junior Dylan Villescas (Las Cruces, N.M.) and freshman Francisco Tejidor (Coral Gables, Fla.) completed the top five for Holy Cross.
In the sub-varsity races, juniors Nick Petsky (Manorville, N.Y.) and Kerry Dunne (Mendham, N.J.) were the top Holy Cross finishers.
The Holy Cross men's and women's cross country teams will return to the course on Friday, Oct. 19, at the Central Connecticut Mini Meet. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. while the men are set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
