Holy Cross Cross Country Runs Away With Patriot League Honors

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's and women's cross country teams swept the Patriot League cross country weekly awards for its performances at the New England Championship on Oct. 9. Junior Dan Altenau (Eastchester, N.Y.), junior Paige Sutherland (Groveland, Mass.), freshman Dylan Villescas (Las Cruces, N.M.) and freshman Emily Hughes (Milton, Mass.) were honored by the league for their performances over the weekend.

Altenau was named Patriot League Runner of the Week after he placed 28th out of 318 runners at the New England Championship with a time of 25:21. It was the third straight race that he was the top finisher for Holy Cross. This is Altenau's second league honor, as he received Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors his freshman year.

Sutherland was named Patriot League Runner of the Week after finishing 20th out of 322 runners at the New England Championship with a time of 18:14. Sutherland has been the Crusaders' top finisher in 17 of their last 18 races. This is the sixth time Sutherland has earned Patriot League honors.

Villescas and Hughes earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors for their performances over the weekend. Villescas finished 84th out of 293 runners in the sub-varsity race of the New England Championship with a time of 27:32, while Hughes placed 96th out of 322 runners with a time of 19:13. This is the first league honor for both runners.

Holy Cross will continue competition next week, Oct. 16, at the Leopard Invitational hosted by Lafayette in Easton, Pa.
