Holy Cross Cross Country Competes At 101st IC4A/ECAC Championship

BRONX, N.Y. - Sophomores Paige Sutherland (Groveland, Mass.) and Cory Loftis (Branford, Conn.) were the top Holy Cross performers at the 101st running of the IC4A/ECAC Cross Country Championship held at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. Saturday afternoon. Sutherland led the women's team to a 12th place finish, while Loftis led the men's team to a 19th place finish. Marist College finished in the top spot in the women's competition, while Temple University took the title in the men's field.

Sutherland finished in sixth place with a time of 18:02.9. Sutherland has been the top Holy Cross performer in every meet she raced this season. Crossing the line behind her in 41st place was fellow sophomore Sarah Mellea (North Arlington, N.J.) with a time of 19:19.5. Freshman Lizzie Harkins (Latrobe, Pa.) also finished in the 19th minute with a time of 19:38.6. Less than a minute separated the remainder of Holy Cross's racers, junior Martha Quinn (Frankfurt, Germany) with a time of 21:08.7, freshman Caiti Derenze (Jamesport, N.Y.) with a time of 21:16.9, junior Kathleen Kasper (Worcester, Mass.) with a time of 21:21.3, junior Allison Fimognari (Wilbraham, Mass.) with a time of 21:32.4 and rookie Katherine Rochford (Red Bank, N.J.) with a time of 21:53.9.

Loftis led the men's team with a 33rd place finish with a time of 26:46.6. Rookie Kyle Shepard (White Plains, N.Y.) was the next Crusader to cross the line in 70th place with a time of 27:31.4, classmate Dylan Leazes (Providence, R.I.) also finished in the 27th minute with a time of 27:56.2. Freshman Kevin Turner (Charlton, Mass.) finished with a time of 28:35.2, sophomore Dan Altenau (Eastchester, N.Y.) with a time of 28:50.9, freshman Chris Schaller (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with a time of 29:04.2 and freshman Nick Poles (Quincy, Mass.) with a time of 29:42.2. Rounding out the field for Holy Cross was freshman Brian Treadway (Albany, N.Y.) with a time of 31:13.6.

The Holy Cross men's and women's cross country teams have concluded the 2009 season.
