PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Holy Cross men's and women's track and field teams kicked off the 2007-2008 season at the Alden Invitational hosted by Brown University. Junior Andrew Maggio (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the team with a first place finish in the 55m dash. On the women's side, junior Lesley Bautista (St. Johns, Newfoundland) placed first in the pole vault with a performance that qualified her for the New England Championship.
Maggio, who ran the 55m in a time of 6.61, was .1 seconds shy of qualifying for the New England Championship. Sophomore Chase Kennedy (Marblehead, Mass.) took a fourth place finish in the 200m with a time of 23.98. Four Crusaders took third place finishes. Freshman Doug Moringiello (Garden City, N.Y.) ran 9.58 in the 55m hurdles, senior John Meikle (Newport, R.I.) jumped 13 feet 6 inches in pole vault, senior Kevin Dowd (Broad Brook, Conn.) jumped 42 feet 11 inches in triple jump and senior Samuel Hutchings (Lakeville, Conn.) threw 47 feet 6 inches in the weight throw.
For the women Bautista, who competed in the pole vault, jumped 11 feet 10 inches for the first place finish. She also made it to the finals in the 55m dash for an eighth place finish with a time of 7.48, .8 second shy of qualifying for the New England Championship. Junior Lauren Courtney (Ashland, Mass.) placed second in the 500m with a time of 1:18.52 which qualified her for the New England Championship. Junior Dannielle Meder (Chicopee, Mass.) qualified for the New England Championship in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.67. Sophomore Jackie Lacouzzi (Spring Lake, N.J.) placed fourth in the mile with a time of 5:28.55.
The track and field teams will be back in action when they travel to the Harvard Invitational on Saturday, December 8. The meet is set to start at 9:00 a.m.
