Providence, R.I. - The Holy Cross men's and women' indoor track teams kicked off their winter season on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Alden Invitational, hosted by Brown University.
In the women's 500-meter dash, senior Emily Winacoo (Holden, Mass.) took third place with a time of 1:20.62. Meanwhile, sophomore Christine Carifio (Haverhill, Mass.) was able run to a fifth place finish in the 1000-meter event in 3:11.89.
Freshman Lesley Bautista (St. John's, Newfoundland) ran well, taking the 10th spot in one of the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.64. Bautista's classmate Lauren Courtney (Ashland, Mass.) finished in sixth place in the 400-meter dash (1:00.85). Another freshman runner, Katie Clay (Beverly, Mass.), finished strong in seventh in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:35.10.
On the men's side, sophomore Conor Meikle (Newport, R.I.) tied for second with Mike Woods of Brown at 3.97 meters in the pole vault. Sophomore Kevin Dowd (Broad Brook, Conn.) was able to jump a distance of 12.50 meters to place third in the men's triple jump.
Junior Nicholas Carr (Concord, Mass.) was the runner-up in the weight throw. Carr took second place with a throw of 15.55 meters while also finishing sixth in the shot put.
Senior Thomas Picanco (Cameron Park, Calif.) finished third in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:13.40. In the 55-meter hurdles, junior Christopher Bier (Rockville Center, N.Y.) also too third place in a time of 8.29.
Both the men's and women's teams will compete again next Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Harvard Invitational. Events will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
