Worcester, Mass. - On Saturday, the Holy Cross men's track and field team won their first home meet of the season beating teams from Maine, Colgate, Central Connecticut, Hartford and American International College. Sophomore Jonathan Medeiros (New Bedford, Mass.) earned a total of 22 points for the Crusaders by winning two events: the discus and the shot put. Medeiros threw a distance of 45.40m (148-11) in the discus, qualifying him for the New England Championship meet. He also threw a distance of 14.40m (47-3.00) in the shot put, to win that event for the Crusaders. Medeiros took seventh place in the hammer throw with a toss of 39.41m (129-03). Senior Nicholas Carr (Concord, Mass.) took second in the hammer throw with a distance of 48.01m (157-06). Junior Stephen Mandravelis (Nashua, N.H.) placed third in that event with a throw of 46.27m (153-03). Junior Samuel Hutchings (Lakeville, Conn.) took fifth with a throw of 42.42m (139-02).
Carr took second in the shot put, throwing a distance of 13.44m (44-01.25). Freshman Nicholas LeBlanc (New Bedford, Mass.) took third for Holy Cross, throwing 13.18 (43-3.00). Junior Nathaniel Couture (Taunton, Mass.) placed first in the javelin with a throw of 57.67m (189-02).
On the track, sophomore Robert Farrelly (East Northport, N.Y.) placed second in the steeplechase with a time of 10:29.57 (3000m). Junior Michael Ricotta (Cross River, NY) placed second in the 400m run, crossing the line in 50.46 seconds. Freshman Chase Kennedy (Marblehead, Mass.) placed third with a time 50.80 seconds as junior Sean Murphy (Shrewsbury, Mass.) covered the distance in 51.12 seconds, placing third. Sophomore Andrew Maggio (Chelmsford, Mass.) ran the 200m dash in 22.49 seconds, taking second place.
In the 5000m, Crusader runners took first and second. Freshman Timothy Richard (Attleboro, Mass.) won the event, covering the distance in 15:38.92 as teammate sophomore Brad Mish (Hadley, Mass.) placed second with a time of 15:41.33.
Holy Cross earned a total of 200 points on the day, beating Maine and Colgate. Maine had a total of 168 points and Colgate earned 129.50 points on the day. The win marks the first time in over a decade that Holy Cross has been victorious over Maine.
The Crusaders will travel to Brown University in Providence, R.I. for the Brown Springtime Invitational on Sunday, April 49. The meet is scheduled to start at 10:00 AM
