Dedham, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's track and field team traveled to Dedham, Mass. and Northeastern University to compete in the Bernard Solomon Invitational on Saturday. The Crusaders took the top spot in two events, the javelin and the 10,000-meter run. Junior Nathaniel Couture (Taunton, Mass.) won the javelin event with a throw of 60.50m (198 feet 6 inches). Senior Stephen Kress (Portland, Maine) earned the top spot in the 10,000m run by covering the distance in 33:11.86. The time qualifies him for the New England Championship meet. The Crusaders had a number of notable performances on the day. In the 400-meter dash, sophomore Andrew Maggio (Chelmsford, Mass.) took second, crossing the line in 50.70 seconds. Teammate, freshman Chase Kennedy took fourth with a time of 51.63 seconds.
Sophomore Stephen Schoenberger (North Hampton, N.H.) placed sixth in the 800-meter run, covering the distance in 2:03.28. Freshman Garrett Huddy (Pataskala, Ohio) led a trio of Crusaders across the line in the 5000-meter run. Huddy took fifth with a time of 16:19.15 as senior John Ortolani (Williamsville, N.Y.) finished in sixth with a time of 16:19.26 and sophomore Matthew Talbot (West Hempstead, N.Y.) placed seventh with a time of 16:48.51. In the steeplechase, sophomore Robert Farrelly (East Northport, N.Y.) placed second, covering the 3000m in 10:35.42. Senior Christopher Bier (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) took fourth in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 57.56 seconds.
In the field events, junior Kevin Dowd (Broad Brook, Conn.) placed second in the triple jump, jumping 12.58m. Junior Patrick McGuire (Franklin, Mass.) took sixth in that event with a jump of 12.17m. Freshman Nicholas LeBlanc (New Bedford, Mass.) threw a distance of 12.96m in the shot put, earning himself eighth place. Sophomore Jonathan Medeiros (New Bedford, Mass.) threw the discus 42.55m, placing fourth. Senior Nicholas Carr (Concord, Mass.) threw 50.92m in the hammer throw, taking fourth place. Sophomore Stephen Madravelis (New Bedford, Mass.), junior Samuel Hutchings (Lakeville, Conn.) and Medeiros all placed in the top ten as well.
The Holy Cross men's track and field team will compete at home this week. They are hosting the Holy Cross Heptathlon on Wednesday, April 18 and Thursday, April 19 at the Hart Center Track. Events are scheduled to start at 12 noon each day of competition.
